What does eucalyptus smell like?

Cool intelligence and green spaciousness

There are scents that don't fill a room, but open it up. Eucalyptus is precisely such a scent. For us at Remoair, it's not just an ingredient – it's a feeling. Of purity, oxygen, and something almost like silence.

Eucalyptus smells like clarity – like a window opened a crack on a chilly morning. It's cool, but never sterile. Mentally activating, but without stress. A scent that breathes with the whole body.

Scent profile: Green, balsamic, and airy

Eucalyptus (primarily Eucalyptus globulus and Corymbia citriodora) has a characteristic, easily recognizable scent – but what it actually smells like is more complex than "mint."

• Top: menthol, lemon peel, green sap
• Heart: camphor, fresh wood, herb
• Base: mineral coolness, subtle resin

To us, it smells like green breathing – a balance of freshness and structure. Not cool to chill, but to create space.

Eucalyptus in history – from medicine to the world of scent

The eucalyptus tree has its roots in Australia, where it grows in hundreds of varieties and has been used for thousands of years by Indigenous people as a plant with healing power. By crushing or heating the leaves, they were used to alleviate fever, cleanse wounds, and open airways. The plant's name has Greek origins – eu means "well," and kalyptos "covering" – an allusion to the protective cap of the flower bud. But it also carries symbolic significance: eucalyptus is, and has always been, a scent that both protects and lets in.

During the 19th century, the eucalyptus tree spread to southern Europe and Africa, not primarily for its scent, but for its thirst – the tree absorbs enormous amounts of water and was used to drain areas where mosquitoes thrived. In this way, it served as a biological defense against malaria, long before the concept of "natural mosquito repellent" even existed.

Today, eucalyptus lives on in everything from aromatherapy to spas, from organic perfumes to Remoair's mosquito candles. It is a plant that carries both the intelligence of botany and the stillness of the world of scent – and constantly finds new spaces to breathe in.

How the scent affects the mind

Eucalyptus is known for its refreshing effect, both physically and mentally. Research shows that it can:

• Increase alertness and concentration
• Relieve headaches and mental fog
• Provide a feeling of oxygenated lightness

For us, eucalyptus is not a "scent weapon" – it's a breathing pause. A reminder that clarity is sometimes the greatest gift of scent.

How eucalyptus scent is produced

The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the leaves, with eucalyptol (1,8-cineole) being the main component. This molecule gives it its characteristic, menthol-like, and cooling sensation.

At Remoair, we primarily use lemon eucalyptus (Corymbia citriodora) – a species with a greener, more lemony profile. It is also from this species that Citrepel® is extracted, a plant-based ingredient with documented mosquito-repelling effects.

In our products, eucalyptus is never a soloist – it is a structural component. A scent that holds things together. Like architecture in a room.

Why we are drawn to eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is the scent of an inner guide. It doesn't point in any direction – but it opens up a space. We believe that's why so many return to it: it creates room. It never says too much, but hints at everything.
